Wimpy Braille Burger Marketing Unfair to Competition

In this video, my friend Geoff Ramm reports from South Africa with this example of clever marketing from a Wimpy Burger.

It's an example of how you can take advantage of the misfortune and mistakes of your competitors. Apparently one of the other hamburger chains asked a blind person with his seeing eye dog to leave the restaurant. That story was splashed in the media with lots of bad publicity for that chain.

So what would you do if you were the competition? Would you politely say, 'what a shame', or would you jump on the opportunity to take an unfair advantage over the competition?

Look at how Wimpy took the unfair advantage. Thanks to Geoff Ramm for this video report.

The Purpose of Marketing is not to Build a Brand video

The purpose of marketing is to sell. Yet, when the marketing fails to product results some marketers claim that is was good branding. Who cares?

If you are small business you should not be wasting your money on branding. Instead you are better off investing your marketing in building more profitable relationships. You are not Coke or Nike. You are "insert your name here".

Cheeky TV ad from First Bank

I like this TV ad from First Bank. It's cheeky, funny and memorable.

It also pokes fun at self annointed experts and motivational speakers. Those are easy targets that very few people will get upset about. I'm called a marketing expert because of my bestselling book and satisfied clients. And I've been described as a motivational speaker so many times that I finally just accepted the label. Yet I wasn't offended by this ad because I recognize the truth in it. The lesson for marketers: It's effective to take a position and be cheeky. And stating the obvious can be a refreshing marketing approach.

Notice that this ad didn't say anything about the features and benefits of working with First Bank. It simply implied that they have a sence of humor, are down to earth and easy to deal with. Hmm, pretty distinctive for a bank. Two thumbs up for this advertisement and the First Bank.

Parison Love video from Google

Why is this Google video ad so effective and what can you learn from it for your marketing? See below...

The setting and images are familiar. Most of us have searched on Google so we recognize the setting. No explanation is needed.

It instantly grabs our attention and holds our attention. It moves fast.

It tells a story. Good marketing tells a story.

The words create images in our mind, (Paris, love, chocolate). That is captivating and engaging.

We can see ourselves or some one we know in this story. It's personal and believable.

The last line makes you smile because it is a feel-good story.

Watch it again. Now compare that to your advertising.

What can one individual do to fight back in a customer service dispute with an airline?

Answer: Write a song and post it on YouTube.

That's what singer Dave Carroll did when United Airlines damaged his guitar. The damage wasn't event an acident. It was a wanton act of disregard for the customer. And it was "not my job" attitude that made it worse.

Read Dave Darroll's story about how United Airlines Breaks guitars.
